Structure

Octane is a hydrocarbon, (meaning it is composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms). Octane belongs to the family of hydrocarbons called the alkane series, and it is the eighth molecule in this family. 
The chemical formula for Octane is C8H18. This means it has eight carbon atoms chained together with eighteen hydrogen atoms as shown in the picture below.
